This guide is written with the assumption that you already know how to operate your computer, and that you already know the basic terms used in this guide to describe operating your computer. NCKCN does not provide basic computer support as we do not sell computers or computer software. You must go through the Help and On-line guides on your computer first to learn how to operate your computer. There are also local businesses that provide basic computer support as well as classes from local schools that might provide this basic training.
If your operating system is OS 8.0 or later, you will probably be using the connection package known as "Apple Remote Access". This dial-up package consists of three interacting components, TCP/IP Control Panel., Remote Access Control Panel, and Remote Access Status. Each one is covered below. All you have to do is configure these to connect to NCKCN to have Apple Remote Access connect your Macintosh to the Internet. Make sure that your Mac is set to use the correct modem, and that your modem is functioning correctly.
The TCP/IP Control Panel sets the necessary parameters for your machine to "talk" the same language as the Internet. This allows you to browse the web, and send and receive email and use the Internet. There are different versions as indicated below.
Older Version

Connect via: - Select PPP from the drop down menu.
Configure: - Select Using PPP Server from the drop down menu.
IP Address: ... Subnet mask: ... and Router address: are supplied by the server once a connection is made.
Name server addr.: These are the IP addresses for the severs that you connect to. There are always four sets of digits separated by dots (periods). This version of Mac OS does not need to have any Name Server Addresses. It should work without them. You can look on your Personal Information sheet which you received from NCKCN for any other DNS information.
Search domains: - Please type in "nckcn.com" as shown above.

The is located within your Control Panels, then select Remote Access. Remote Access Control Panel is where your username, password, phone number and connection particulars are specified to connect to NCKCN. Simply fill in the information required as shown below. Note: You can also connect to NCKCN with Remote Access Control Panel by simply clicking on the Connect button. However, we recommend using Remote Access Status described in the Remote Access Status section below.
Name: username - is your account user name provided by NCKCN. For example: "jsmith". Type your User Name EXACTLY as given in your Personal Information sheet. (Note: Your User name is just your username. For example jsmith or sbrown. Your username is not your email address which is in the form username@nckcn.com). Important: Most things are case sensitive on the Internet. If your username is jsmith, then type jsmith, not Jsmith, or JSmith, or JSMITH. This is critically important. Also, do not have an extra space or spaces in your NCKCN dial-up username connection. For example:
instead of having a correct username of say "jsmith", it is set like: " jsmith", or "j smith", or "jsmith " with an extra space or spaces before, in the middle of, or after the username. Your account will not work correctly if you have extra spaces in your username, and your connection will not work properly if you type it in incorrectly. Your username and password have to be exactly as it is given to you. Again: Your username and password have to be exactly as it is given to you.
Password: - carefully enter your password. Type your Password EXACTLY as given in your Personal Information sheet. Your account will not work correctly if you don't type it in correctly. Your username and password have to be exactly as it is given to you. Again: Your username and password have to be exactly as it is given to you. (Only bullets will be displayed to prevent someone from looking over your shoulder to get your password) . A word of caution about passwords. Your passwords are designed to give you maximum security and peace of mind. Don't give your password to anyone. In fact, the best way to keep youngsters from accessing the Internet unsupervised, is of course, not give them your password!
Number: - Type the specified telephone number to NCKCN. The dashes that separate area codes, prefixes etc. are optional and have no effect on the number dialed. This will be the local access number to connect to NCKCN.
Once you have this information entered you may close the window. You will be asked to save the configuration ... select Save.
This is a small utility program that tells your modem to dial (or disconnect from) the appropriate number for your Internet Service Provider (ISP), and uses the configuration you have in the Remote Access Control Panel. The Remote Access Status utility is automatically installed into your "Apple Menu Items" by the system software and/or may be located in your control strip if you prefer to use the control strip. Simply select the Apple Menu, ...
(the
in the upper left hand corner of the screen)
then select Remote Access Status. You will get the connection window shown below. Simple click the Connect button to dial.
While connecting the Remote Access Status utility looks like this example. (Your telephone number will be different, it will be the local access number to connect to NCKCN.)
When connected the Remote Access Status utility looks like this to indicate you have connected to the NCKCN system.
Using the Remote Access Status utility is the preferred method to connect since it gives the user control over the modem. Simply press the Connect button to connect to your account and press the Disconnect button to disconnect from NCKCN.
That's it! You should now be able to connect to NCKCN and utilize all of the online resources offered. Please contact support@nckcn.com if you have questions.
