Many people probably never
give infertility a single thought, but the fact
is, in the United States, 1 out of 6
couples, or about 4 to 6 million people, suffer
from infertility. We were one of those couples.
Infertility is similar to the grieving process of
losing a loved one. The emotional aspects of
being diagnosed with infertility can be
devastating. Each month you get your hopes up
only to have them pulled right out from under
you. The "high-powered" infertility
drugs can add to those emotions. Many people
don't understand the impact infertility can have
on a couple's life and can say things that are
hurtful without even realizing it and will be
forever etched in the couple's minds.
Financially, infertility can
be crippling with some assisted reproductive
techniques costing anywhere from $3,000 to well
over $10,000 per cycle. Many couples continue on
with their treatments for several cycles, some
even extending into years. Many couples have
problems making ends meet when going through
treatments to try and conceive the child they so
desire and deserve. Unfortunately, most insurance
companies across the United States will not pay
for the cost of infertility treatments. Kansas
(where we live) is no exception, even though
studies have shown that premiums would only
increase about $1.00 to $1.50 per family in
Kansas, which would provide full insurance
coverage. There are several illnesses in the
world that people contract through habits they
are fully aware can contribute to an illness.
However, the problem of infertility is most often
through no fault of our own.
Taupin wrote the song Blessed
for Elton John. The words to this song express
how I felt every second of every day while
struggling through our infertility.
