Free Member Website Guide

NCKCN Members: Those of you who have a FREE Members website will need to be aware of a few changes that are in effect as of today: August 1st, 2017. Aside from the release, or launch, of NCKCN's new website, NCKCN is also under-going other major changes, one in particular is in regards to how those with a FREE Member website will access their files. Recently, NCKCN has built brand new server(s) just for this along with creating a new sub-domain where ALL members FREE websites will be located. Also, NCKCN is under-going, what we call, an "end-of-the-summer" clean-up. With all this said, we have broken all of this information down into (3) categories which is provided below:

1.) How do I access my FREE Member website now?
2.) NCKCN no longer supports Microsoft FrontPage, what do I need to edit/upload my websites content?
3.) What do you mean by "end-of-the-summer" clean-up?

1.) How do I access my FREE Member website now?

Simply put, all free member websites are now centralized & will soon be located here: http://my-space.nckcn.com/member/. No longer is NCKCN using either http://members.nckcn.com/yourUserName/ -or- http://www.nckcn.com/homepage/yourUserName. In the meantime, while the main member page is being built, you will be able to access your free website by typing this URL in your browser of choice: http://my-space.nckcn.com/member/yourUserName (Example: http://my-space.nckcn.com/mdraemel/). All usernames and passwords will remain the same. If you are unable to access your free website, please see the below section on "What do you mean by "end-of-the-summer" clean-up?".

2.) NCKCN no longer supports Microsoft FrontPage, what do I need to edit/upload my websites content?

First and foremost, there is more than one way of editing/uploading content to/for your website. As many of you have created your website using Microsoft's FrontPage program, which NCKCN no longer supports, you will need to find an alternative method which, as well, NCKCN provides below. A little background before we get started: Microsoft discontinued support for FrontPage back in 2008 and it's time for NCKCN to do the same. With that said, here is the new way of editing/uploading your content:

2a.) Using an FTP program such as: FileZilla -- (Highly Recommended and Free!)

• Simply click on the "FileZilla" link above and download the "FileZilla Client - All platforms". Once downloaded, install it and follow any on-screen instructions.

• Once installed, open the program up.

• Once open, click on "File" and select "Site Manager".

• Click the "New Site" button and type in your site's name (or something that you will remember) and hit your enter key on your keyboard. Next, on the right-hand side under the "General" tab, type this in for the host: "my-space.nckcn.com" without the quotes. You do not need to specify a port number. Protocol should be as follow (and by default): "FTP - File Transfer Protocol". Encryption should be as follow (and by default): "Use explicit FTP over TLS if available".

• Below the Encryption is "Logon Type". By default, it shows "Anonymous", however, you will need to select from the drop-down menu and select "Ask for password". In doing so, the below field "User" is no longer grayed out. In the "User" field, highlight "anonymous" and type in your username (Example: mdraemel). Then click the "Connect" button.

• Once you click the "Connect" button, you will be prompt to type in your "Password". Go ahead and type in your password. There is also a checkbox you may select or de-select asking to "Remember password until FileZilla is closed". This is optional and completely up to you if you want it checked or un-checked.

• The last step to connect is to click the "Ok" button. You are now connected via FTP to your free website root directory -- Happy Coding!

** NOTE: Once logged in via FTP to your website, you will see a few critical folders and files of which you should NOT modify and/or delete. There are listed below:

○ ".filemin" folder

○ ".policy" folder

○ ".usermin" folder

○ "logs" folder

○ ".bash_logout" file

○ ".bashrc" file

○ ".profile" file

○ "HOW-TO-GET-STARTED.txt" file

○ "READ-ME.txt" file

** If there are any other files/folders listed in your root directory, they are your files/folders that got transferred over from NCKCN's old server(s). NCKCN and the rest of the world are exited to see what you have created or will be creating! As always, Happy coding!

• The very last step, after you have finished editing/uploading your content, is to disconnect from the server. To do this, simply click on the "Server" tab located in-between "Transfer" and "Bookmarks" and select "Disconnect".

2b.) Log in using NCKCN's Usermin module -- (Alternative Recommendation and also Free!)

• Simply click on the "Usermin" link above - it will open up a new tab for you and all you need to do is login with your username and password.

• Once logged in, you will see NCKCN's "System Information" page.

• To proceed to your root directory, simply click on the "Other" link located on the left-hand side and click "File Manager".

• Next, click on the "u" folder, then the "home" folder, the "__myspace" folder, the "member" folder, and finally, your "username" folder.

• As mentioned above, (under the "Using an FTP program..." section), there will be certain files and folders of which you should NOT modify and/or delete. All other files and folders not listed above are your files/folders that got transferred over from NCKCN's old server(s). As previously mentioned, NCKCN and the rest of the world are exited to see what you have created or will be creating! And as always, Happy coding!

• The very last step, after you have finished editing/uploading your content, is to logout from the server. To do this, simply click on the "Logout" link located on the left-hand side.

** FINAL NOTE: Remember, to access your website via browser, your new URL will be: "http://my-space.nckcn.com/member/yourUserName/" - (Example: http://my-space.nckcn.com/mdraemel/).

3.) What do you mean by "end-of-the-summer" clean-up?

NCKCN's "end-of-the-summer" clean-up is pretty straight-forward. In a nut-shell, it means we are dusting off old server(s) and migrating data over to brand spankin' new server(s) which is mandatory. During this transition - the boys in blue, also known as the NCKCN Staff Members, have decided to see who still uses their Free Member website. Not only will this tell us who still uses their free member website, but it also means that there are some websites that have never been taken down due to a member cancelling or unsubscribing from all other NCKCN services. So the best approach for us to take is to migrate only the free member websites that are still being used.

If you are a NCKCN Member who received a free member website, chances are you will not be able to access it until we create a new account for you on our newer server(s). With that said, the solution to this is pretty simple. Simply contact us via email and provide your username and password. We will cross-match the information you provided us with the information we have on hand to ensure that, in fact, you received a free members website and if all matches, we will create a new account on our newer server(s) for you, transfer your data, or websites content, over for you and will email you back within 24-48 hours with further information.

NCKCN is putting a deadline on when to contact us by, so you will need to contact us as soon as possible. The deadline is: October 31st, 2017 - A three month grace-period. After the deadline, those who have not contacted us in regards to their free member website will no longer have one and all data will be destroyed.

Contact us at: webmaster@nckcn.com - Please title the Subject as: "Free Member website" and in your emails body, please include: your username, password, and the URL you used before to view your free member website.

A FINAL NOTE: NCKCN in the very near future may no longer provide free member websites. Those who already have one though will continue to have one as they are "grandfathered-in". More information regarding this will be posted in the near future.
