SPRING
CLEANING!
The weather is finally warming up, the sun is shining, the
birds are singing, the flowers are blooming and the grass is
greening up. Nothing the windows open to enjoy the sounds and
smells of spring.
It
is also time to clean out garages, attics and basements. Do
you ever wonder where all the clutter came from? Surely it's
multiplyed when you weren't looking. Maybe there are
articles you have inherited over the years and just didn't know
where else to store them. What do you do with everything you
have accumulated over the years?
Most of
us get rid of articles we had when we were growing up,
thinking "no one would want that,
it's not even that old to be
considered for a museum". Consider if everyone
disposed of everything they had from the 1950's or 1990's, where
will we be in 30 to 50 years?
If
you plan to discard them, then why not consider bringing them to the
museum? If we don't take the time to preserve our past, what
will our children and grandchildren have to learn from? This
is one way they can see what our culture was like.
There are many different objects that you don't think
anyone would be interested in, but to the next person they could be
a wealth of information. We have turned into a throw away
society which means we are throwing away our history. Please
help us by not only preserving our history but also taking the time
to remove more from our
landfills.
Grandma gave it to mother,
Mother
gave it away,
I'm buying it back!!!

SMOKEHOUSE
UPDATE!
|
Madaline Miller and her
family graciously donated a limestone smokehouse to
the Republic County Historical Society Museum. It comes to us from her
family home south - east of Courtland, Kansas. It is approximately 120 years
old and was completely made of limestone.
On June 15, 2009 the smokehouse
was raised off of the ground and was ready to be placed on the
trailer for it's move to the Museum.
The move will take place in two
separate increments. The first part of the process was
completed June 17, 2009.
The
smokehouse left its home near Courtland and made it's
way to its new home at the Republic County
Historical Society Museum.
The move covered almost
15 miles and took 2 1/2 hours to complete.
It is temporarily located west of the Museum right
off of Highway 36.
The second part of the process will
be the placement of the smokehouse onto it's permanent home
on the Museum grounds. If everything goes well it
will be moved and set sometime the week of
June 22 - 26.
Check back daily as we will keep the web page
updated with moving details as soon as we know the
dates. |
